Workplace inspectors will start randomly checking businesses throughout Queensland next month to ensure employers are maintaining proper records.

Workplace Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson announced the campaign during a visit to Brisbane today.

Mr Wilson said the Workplace Relations Act required employers to keep accurate and complete time and wages records and issue pay slips to all staff.

“From July our inspectors will start randomly ‘dropping in’ on businesses to ensure they are complying with their obligations,” he said.

“The requirements on employers are designed to ensure that workers receive their correct wages and conditions.
“As the independent watchdog, it’s our job to ensure the rights and obligations of both workers and employers are understood and enforced fairly.”

Inspectors have the power to inspect and copy time and wages records.

Mr Wilson said that any employer found not to be complying with the law would be asked to rectify the matter voluntarily. Those who refuse could be issued with infringement penalties up to $550 or face fines up to a maximum $33,000 per breach if the issue goes to court.

In some areas of South-East Queensland, Workplace Ombudsman inspectors will work with their counterparts from the Queensland Department of Employment and Industrial Relations.

Where employers do not fall within federal jurisdiction, state inspectors will discuss their requirements of employers under Queensland legislation.

Mr Wilson said the state’s peak industry bodies, key employer associations and relevant unions had been informed of the upcoming campaign
So far this financial year, the Workplace Ombudsman has received 18,242 workplace claims nationally, started 4598 targeted investigations and recovered more than $25 million for 21,721 employees.

Mr Wilson said that over three months from August to October, short distance road freight operators in Queensland would be targeted as part of a national road transport industry campaign.

Inspectors will check minimum rates, minimum shifts, split shift provisions and allowances, payslips and time sheets.
